V Shape Body (V Taper)
A V shape body, also called a V taper, means broad shoulders and an upper back that narrow down to a smaller waist, so the torso looks like the letter V. This page explains what counts as a V shaped body, lets you measure your own V taper ratio, and covers how to build one and dress it.
Shoulder to waist ratio
What is a V shape body?
A V shaped body has shoulders and a back that are clearly wider than the waist. From the front, the outline runs out from the neck to broad shoulders, then narrows in a straight line to the waist and hips. In fitness this look is called a V taper physique; in body shape terms it’s the inverted triangle, with the milder version called a trapezoid.
Three things create the V: wide shoulders (partly bone structure, partly the deltoid muscles), a wide upper back from the lats, and a narrow waist. Hip width matters too: narrow hips make the V look sharper. You can see where you sit with the male body type calculator.
V taper ratio (shoulder to waist ratio)
The simplest way to measure a V taper is to divide your shoulder circumference by your waist circumference. The checker above does this for you.
V taper ratio = shoulders ÷ waist
Example: 48 in ÷ 34 in = 1.41
| Ratio | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Under 1.15 | Straight torso, little or no V (rectangle or oval) |
| 1.15–1.40 | Visible taper, the common athletic build (trapezoid) |
| 1.40–1.55 | Strong V shape (inverted triangle) |
| About 1.6+ | The “golden ratio”, also called the Adonis index |
The 1.6 figure comes from the golden ratio (1.618) and was popularised as the Adonis index in fitness writing. It’s an aesthetic ideal, not a health measure. For health, the size of your waist matters more; check your waist to hip ratio.
How to get a V taper
You can widen the top of the V and narrow the bottom. Bone structure sets the limits, so two people doing the same training will end up with different tapers, but almost everyone can improve theirs.
- Build the shoulders. The side of the shoulder (lateral deltoid) adds the most width. Lateral raises, overhead presses and upright rows are the usual staples.
- Widen the upper back. The lats create the flare under the arms. Pull-ups, lat pulldowns and rows train them; pull-ups are the classic V taper exercise.
- Keep the waist lean. You can’t spot-reduce fat from the waist, but lowering overall body fat through diet and activity shrinks it. Very heavy direct oblique work can thicken the waist for some people.
- Be patient and consistent. Most people see a visible change after a few months of regular training. Re-measure every 6–8 weeks rather than daily.
V shape body in women
Women can have a V shape body too. It’s the female inverted triangle: shoulders or bust at least 3.6 inches wider than the hips, often seen in swimmers and athletes. The styling goal is usually the opposite of the gym goal for men: balance broad shoulders by adding volume to the lower half with A-line skirts, wide-leg trousers and V-necklines. How to dress a V shape body (men)
- Shirts: athletic-fit or tapered cuts, so the chest fits without excess fabric at the waist. Stretch fabric helps.
- Jackets: soft or unpadded shoulders; a structured shoulder can make the top look oversized.
- Trousers and jeans: straight or relaxed fits balance the upper body. Very skinny legs exaggerate the top.
- Necklines: V-necks and open collars lengthen the torso; very wide boat necks add more width up top.
Frequently asked questions
What is a V taper?
A V taper is the outline of a torso with broad shoulders and a wide upper back that narrow to a smaller waist, like the letter V. It’s usually measured as shoulder circumference divided by waist circumference.
Is a V-shaped body attractive?
In surveys and studies of male attractiveness, a higher shoulder to waist ratio is consistently rated more attractive by many people, which is why the V shape is so often called the ideal male build. Tastes still vary between people and cultures.
Is a V-shaped body rare?
A strong V, with a shoulder to waist ratio of 1.6 or more, is uncommon without dedicated training and naturally broad shoulders. A mild taper, the trapezoid shape, is one of the most common male builds.
What is the Adonis index?
The Adonis index is the name fitness writers gave to a shoulder to waist ratio of about 1.618, the golden ratio. It’s used as an aesthetic target for a V taper, not as a health measure.
How long does it take to get a V taper?
It depends on your starting point, frame and training. With regular shoulder and back training and a lean waist, most people notice a difference within a few months, while a dramatic V usually takes years.
