Male Body Types

There are five male body types by shape: trapezoid, inverted triangle, rectangle, triangle and oval. They describe how your shoulders, waist and hips compare, which is what decides how shirts, jackets and trousers fit. This guide shows all five men’s body types side by side, how they differ from ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph, and how to dress each one.

The 5 male body shapes explained

Trapezoid

The most common athletic build: shoulders and chest clearly wider than the waist, with hips in proportion. It’s the shape most off-the-rack menswear is cut for, so slim and regular fits usually work without alterations. The trapezoid body shape is the easiest to dress; keep fits tailored rather than baggy so the taper shows. Full guide: trapezoid body shape.

Inverted triangle (V shape)

Very broad shoulders and chest, a narrow waist and slim hips: the V shaped body of swimmers and lifters. Shirts that fit the chest billow at the waist, so look for athletic-fit cuts and stretch fabrics. Straight or relaxed trousers stop the legs looking thin. Full guide: inverted triangle body shape for men and V shape body.

Rectangle

Shoulders, waist and hips are close in width, giving a straight up-and-down line with little taper. Structured jackets, chest pockets, layering and horizontal stripes on top build the shoulders and suggest a V. More in the rectangle body shape for men section.

Triangle

Hips and waist are wider than the shoulders, and weight tends to gather at the lower stomach and thighs. Add structure up top with lightly padded blazers and crew necks, and keep trousers dark and straight. See triangle body shape in men.

Oval

The waist is the widest part, with weight carried round the middle. Vertical lines, single-breasted jackets worn open, darker tops and mid-rise trousers with a little stretch lengthen the frame. Avoid very slim shirts that pull across the stomach, and check your waist to hip ratio, since weight at the waist matters most for health. Full guide: oval body shape.

Male body types vs ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph

Search for “male body types” and you’ll also find the three somatotypes. They answer a different question: not how your outline looks, but how your build tends to behave.

SomatotypeBuildOften looks like
EctomorphLean, narrow frame, finds it hard to gain weight or muscleRectangle
MesomorphNaturally muscular, gains muscle easilyTrapezoid or inverted triangle
EndomorphWider frame, stores fat easilyOval or triangle

Most men are a mix, and somatotypes aren’t a measurement system. For clothing fit, your shape from shoulders, waist and hips is the more useful answer.

How to measure your body type as a man

  1. Shoulders: wrap the tape all the way around at the widest point of the shoulders, arms relaxed. A second person helps. If you’re on your own, use your chest instead.
  2. Waist: measure at your natural waist, usually just above the belly button, breathing out normally.
  3. Hips: measure around the widest part of the seat with your feet together.
  4. Compare: enter the numbers in the check above or the male body type calculator for a full result.

The “ideal” male body type

The ideal male body most often described in fitness and fashion is the V shape: broad shoulders and a narrow waist, sometimes summed up as a shoulder-to-waist ratio of about 1.6. That’s a cultural ideal rather than a health target. Every one of the five types can look sharp in clothes cut for it, and training changes muscle and fat but not the width of your hips or your bone frame.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most attractive male body type?

Surveys most often point to the V shape: broad shoulders over a narrower waist, which is the trapezoid or a mild inverted triangle. Tastes still vary, and fit and posture change how any build comes across.

How should men dress for their body type?

Dress to balance your proportions. Add structure on top if your shoulders are narrower than your hips or waist, choose athletic-fit shirts if your chest is much wider than your waist, and use darker colours and vertical lines where you are widest.

What jeans fit my body type as a man?

Slim or straight jeans suit trapezoid and rectangle builds. Inverted triangles look better in straight or relaxed fits that balance broad shoulders. Triangle and oval builds do best in dark, straight-leg jeans with a mid rise and a little stretch.

How do you get a V-shaped body?

Build the shoulders and upper back with presses, pull-ups and rows, and reduce waist fat with an overall calorie deficit. Training can’t change your hip bones, so how strong the V gets depends partly on your frame. Measure your taper with the V shape body checker.

Are ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph male body types?

They are somatotypes, a separate system about build and how easily you gain muscle or fat. The five shapes on this page describe your outline, which is what matters for clothing fit.
