Trapezoid Body Shape
The trapezoid body shape is the most common athletic male build: broad shoulders and chest that taper to a narrower waist, with hips in proportion. It’s the shape most menswear is cut for, which makes it the easiest male body type to dress. Here’s how to tell if you’re a trapezoid, how it differs from an inverted triangle, and what to wear.

A trapezoid body shape in men has shoulders and a chest that are clearly wider than the waist, while the hips stay in proportion with the rest of the frame. The outline looks like an upside-down trapezoid: wide at the top, narrowing gently towards the waist, then running fairly straight down.
It’s the classic “athletic” male body type, and the build that most off-the-rack shirts, suits and jackets are designed around. That’s why trapezoid men can usually buy slim or regular fits without alterations. It’s one of the five male body types, alongside inverted triangle, rectangle, triangle and oval.
Signs you have a trapezoid male body shape
- Your shoulders are 15% or more wider than your waist (shoulders ÷ waist of 1.15 or above), measured all the way around.
- Your shoulders are less than 25% wider than your hips. Go beyond that and you move into the inverted triangle shape.
- Your waist isn’t your widest point, and your hips aren’t wider than your shoulders.
- Shirts fit well off the rack in slim or regular cuts, without billowing at the waist or pulling across the chest.

Trapezoid vs inverted triangle body shape
The two shapes are often confused because both have a V taper. The difference is how extreme it is:
| Trapezoid | Inverted triangle (V shape) | |
|---|---|---|
| Shoulders vs hips | Wider, but under 25% | 25% or more wider |
| Shoulders vs waist | 15% or more wider | Usually 12 in or more wider |
| Look | Balanced, athletic | Very broad top, slim hips and legs |
| Fit issue | Few; most cuts fit | Shirts tight on top, loose at waist |
Compared with a rectangle, the trapezoid has a visible taper; a rectangle’s shoulders, waist and hips are close in width.
How to dress a trapezoid body shape
The goal for trapezoid body shape clothing is simple: show the natural taper, and don’t hide it under baggy fabric.
- Shirts and T-shirts: slim or tailored fits that follow the chest and narrow at the waist. Crew necks and V-necks both work.
- Jackets and suits: most off-the-rack jackets fit; choose natural or lightly structured shoulders and a slightly suppressed waist.
- Trousers and jeans: slim or straight legs, mid rise. Very baggy trousers make the top look top-heavy, very skinny ones make it look smaller.
- Knitwear and layers: fitted knits, overshirts and bomber jackets all sit well because the shoulders carry them.
- Avoid: boxy, oversized shirts and drop shoulders, which hide your best feature.

Frequently asked questions
Is trapezoid a good body shape?
It’s often considered the most balanced male body shape, because the shoulders are broader than the waist without being extreme. It’s also the easiest to dress, since most menswear is cut for it. That said, every body shape can look good in clothes that fit.
What is the difference between a trapezoid and an inverted triangle body shape?
Both taper from shoulders to waist, but an inverted triangle is more extreme: the shoulders are at least 25% wider than the hips. A trapezoid’s shoulders are wider, but the hips stay in proportion, so the look is balanced rather than top-heavy.
Can a woman have a trapezoid body shape?
Trapezoid is a men’s body type term. A woman with shoulders and bust wider than her hips is usually described as an inverted triangle or, with a defined waist, a top hourglass. The body type calculator gives the female equivalent.
How do you get a trapezoid body shape?
Build the shoulders, chest and upper back with presses, rows and pull-ups, and keep your waist lean through overall activity and diet. Your bone frame sets the limits, but most men can move towards a trapezoid shape with consistent training.
