If you’ve ever wondered “what shape is my face?”, the answer comes from four things: the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw, and the length of your face. Here’s how each shape compares.
How to measure your face shape
Measuring is the most reliable way to tell your face shape at home. You need a flexible tape measure or a ruler and a mirror. Pull your hair back and measure straight across, not around the curve of your face.
- Forehead: measure across the widest part of your forehead, from hairline to hairline, usually about halfway between your eyebrows and hairline.
- Cheekbones: find the highest point of each cheekbone, just below the outer corner of your eyes, and measure straight across.
- Jaw: measure across from one corner of your jaw to the other, at the point just below each ear where the jaw angles down.
- Face length: measure from the centre of your hairline down to the tip of your chin.
- Jawline shape: look in the mirror and decide whether your jaw is rounded, angular or narrows to a point.
How to determine your face shape from a photo
The photo option in the calculator measures the same four widths from points you tap. For the most accurate result:
- Hold the camera at eye level, about an arm’s length away, and look straight at it. Tilting your head changes the proportions.
- Pull your hair back from your face and hairline, and keep a neutral expression; smiling widens the cheeks.
- Use the back camera or a photo someone else takes if you can; front cameras held close can make the middle of the face look wider.

The rule of thumb is contrast: angular frames soften round faces, and rounded frames soften angular ones. Frames should be about as wide as the widest part of your face.

Men’s face shapes use the same measurements and the same seven categories, though square and oblong faces are more common in men because of a broader jaw. How the face shape calculator decides
The calculator compares the three widths with each other, then compares your face length with your widest measurement:

The oval face is most often called the ideal because its balanced proportions suit almost any hairstyle or frame. In reality, attractiveness depends far more on symmetry, expression and grooming than on face shape, and every shape has styles that flatter it.

Does removing wisdom teeth change your face shape?
Usually not in a way other people notice. Wisdom teeth sit at the back of the jaw, so removing them doesn’t change the bone structure that sets your face shape. Swelling can make your face look rounder for a few days after surgery.
Do braces change your face shape?
They can change it slightly. By moving teeth and correcting the bite, braces can alter the position of the lips and the look of the lower face, especially in teenagers whose jaws are still growing. In adults, the underlying face shape usually stays the same.
