Dress Size Calculator

This free dress size calculator turns your bust, waist and hip measurements into your US, UK, EU and Australian dress size, plus the letter size (XS to 3XL). It also tells you when your measurements fall in different sizes, which is common, and what to do about it. There’s a wedding dress option too, because bridal sizes run small.

How the dress size calculator works

It’s a women’s dress size calculator that also works as a UK dress size calculator and EU converter. The calculator compares each of your three measurements with a standard US women’s (misses) size chart and finds the size that fits each one. Because a dress has to fit your fullest point, your recommended size is the largest of the three. It then converts that size to UK, EU and Australian sizing and to a letter size.

Sizes vary between brands, so treat the result as your starting point and always check the brand’s own size chart before you buy. Plus sizes up to US 24 are included; for larger sizes, use the brand’s women’s or plus chart.

How to measure for your dress size

Like any dress size measurements calculator, the result is only as accurate as your tape, so take a minute to measure carefully.

  1. Bust: wrap a soft tape around the fullest part of your bust, over the bra you’ll wear with the dress, keeping it level across your back.
  2. Waist: measure your natural waist, the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button. Breathe out normally.
  3. Hips: stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your seat.
  4. Check the fit: the tape should be snug but not tight; you should be able to slip one finger underneath.

For every other body measurement, with a diagram, see how to measure your body. These are the same measurements the body type calculator uses, so you can find your body shape with the same numbers.

What if you’re between two dress sizes?

Most people are. If your bust, waist and hips land in different sizes, buy the size that fits your largest measurement and have the rest taken in, which is far easier than letting a dress out. Your body shape also tells you which styles avoid the problem:

  • Hips a size or more bigger than bust (often pear or spoon): A-line and fit-and-flare dresses fit the hips without being loose up top.
  • Bust a size or more bigger than hips (often inverted triangle): wrap dresses and stretch bodices adjust to the bust.
  • Waist the largest size (often apple): empire-waist and shift dresses skim the middle.

Wedding dress size calculator

Bridal gowns usually run one to two sizes smaller than everyday clothes, so most brides order a size or two up from their normal dress size. Choose Wedding in the calculator to see your likely bridal size. Bridal shops order from their own designer charts and usually take your measurements in store, so confirm the size with them before ordering, and allow time for alterations. The same advice applies if you’re using it as a prom dress size calculator, since many prom and formal gowns come from bridal designers and follow the same smaller sizing.

Why not a dress size calculator based on height and weight?

Many people search for a dress size calculator using height and weight, but those two numbers can’t tell you where your weight sits. Two women of the same height and weight can wear sizes several apart, depending on their bust, waist and hips. That’s why this calculator, like brand size charts, uses tape measurements.

Frequently asked questions

How do I determine my dress size?

Measure your bust, natural waist and hips with a soft tape, then compare each one with a size chart. Choose the size that fits your largest measurement, because a dress has to fit your fullest point, and have it taken in elsewhere if needed. The calculator above does this for you.

What size wedding dress am I?

Wedding dresses usually run one to two sizes smaller than everyday clothes, so most brides order a size or two above their normal dress size. Choose the Wedding option in the calculator for a starting point, and confirm with the bridal shop, which will measure you against the designer’s own chart.

Is size 28 a size 4 or 6?

A size 28 usually refers to a 28-inch jeans waist, which most US brands match to a size 6, and some to a 4. Check the brand’s size chart, since jeans sizing varies more than dress sizing.

Is every 10 pounds a dress size?

Not reliably. A common rule of thumb is roughly 10 to 15 pounds per size, but it depends on your height, frame and where your body carries weight. Your measurements are a much better guide than the scale.

What is my UK dress size?

UK sizes are usually four numbers higher than US sizes, so a US 8 is a UK 12. Australian sizes follow the UK, and EU sizes are usually the US size plus 30, so a US 8 is an EU 38.
