About
About Body Type Calculator
Free body shape tools and guides, built on published fit research and checked by hand.
What this site is
Body Type Calculator is a free set of tools and guides that help you find your body shape and dress for it. Find your shape from four tape measurements on the body type calculator, check your waist to hip ratio, measure your V taper, or read a full guide for each shape, from hourglass to inverted triangle.
Everything on the site is free to use, needs no sign-up and works on any phone or computer. The site is supported by advertising, which never affects how a calculator works or what a guide recommends.
Who runs it
Why we built it
Body shape advice online is often contradictory. One quiz says you’re a pear, another says hourglass, and neither explains why. Shopping for clothes that fit then becomes guesswork.
Our aim is simple: give you a clear, measured answer, show the reasoning behind it, and turn it into practical advice about what fits. We also want body shape to be treated as information, not judgement. Every shape is common, and every shape can be dressed well.
How our calculators work
- Female body shapes follow the Female Figure Identification Technique (FFIT), developed in apparel research at North Carolina State University (Simmons, Istook and Devarajan, 2004). It compares the differences between bust, waist, high hip and hip measurements.
- How common each shape is comes from a North Carolina State University study of more than 6,000 women measured by 3D body scanner (Devarajan and Istook).
- Waist to hip ratio thresholds (0.85 for women, 0.90 for men) come from the World Health Organization expert consultation on waist circumference and waist–hip ratio.
- Male body types compare shoulder, waist and hip circumference. There is no single research standard for men, so the thresholds are our own, chosen to match how menswear is cut. We say so on the page.
- Unit conversion happens before any rule is applied, so results are the same whether you measure in inches or centimetres.

Corrections policy
If we get something wrong, we fix it. When a reader reports an error, we check it against the source and the calculator. Confirmed mistakes are corrected promptly and the page’s update date changes. Significant changes to how a calculator works are noted on the page itself.
Advertising and independence
We show ads through Google AdSense to keep the site free. Advertisers have no say in our content, and ads are kept separate from calculator results. Some guides may later include affiliate links to clothing stores; if they do, we will say so on the page. See our disclaimer for details.
